Designed for use with early educators, business leaders, policymakers, and the public, these presentations can help frame the discussion on pre-k and validate your message with clear, persuasive data.

Pre-K: A Smart Investment (updated April 2006) describes the benefits of pre-k to the child, family, and community. Research findings from key studies (High/Scope, Abecedarian, and the Chicago Child Parent Centers) are reviewed. A study of pre-k in Tulsa, OK, documents why all children need and benefit from pre-k. The presentation also includes information from newer studies by Dr. Clive Belfield as well as the RAND Corporation detailing the economic benefits of pre-k.

Quality: The Critical Need for Pre-K (updated October 2009) describes the importance of quality in assuring pre-k programs attain successful outcomes. The presentation discusses essential quality elements and reviews the quality of pre-k programs nationwide. While many factors affect quality, the pre-k teacher is the most important. Highly educated pre-k teachers are more likely to develop a responsive and strong interpersonal relationship with each child and foster the young child's motivation to learn, social competence, and school achievement.

While reauthorizing Head Start in 2007, Congress added a new provision requiring every state to create or designate a State Advisory Council to better coordinate early education and care services. Pre-K Now has two new resources designed to help policymakers and advocates navigate the process of setting up Councils and seize the opportunities offered by them.

A number of proposals supporting state-funded high-quality, voluntary pre-kindergarten have been introduced in the 111th Congress. Pre-K Now has analyzed four of the most promising bills: "The Prepare All Kids Act"; the "The Ready to Learn Act"; "The Providing Resources Early for Kids Act"; and "The Universal Pre-Kindergarten Act."
Providing voluntary, high-quality pre-k to all children is as much about economic development as it is a tool to improve educational outcomes.
